National Weatherization Day, held annually on October 30, is an opportunity to highlight the important work performed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program network.

“Words cannot express how grateful I am for the improvements that (OACAC has) made in my home,” said Tammie, Weatherization Assistance recipient. “Overall, this experience has been a dream come true. It’s such a wonderful feeling to know my three grandkids will be warm and cozy this winter.”

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) was created in 1976 to assist income-eligible families who lack resources to invest in energy efficiency. WAP is available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Native American tribes, and U.S. Territories. The OACAC Weatherization Assistance Program serves 10 counties across Southwest Missouri, including Barry, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Greene, Lawrence, Polk, Stone, Taney, and Webster.   

Between 7/1/22-6/30/23, OACAC weatherized 124 homes across the Ozarks. Benefits include reduced energy usage; increased energy efficiency of the home; long-term energy savings; and a safer, healthier living environment. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, weatherized households save an average up to 20-25% on utility costs.

Weatherization services may include insulation of attic, floors and walls; weather stripping; repairs to doors and windows; heating systems and appliances tested for safety and efficiency; and air sealing.
