Happy, Working, And Stable – One Family’s Story Of Success

As a young woman, Amy needed a place where she could receive reproductive healthcare. She heard about Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation (OACAC) Family Planning and called to make an appointment. “They got me in as fast as possible and treated me privately,” said Amy. She received an exam and birth control.

Years later, pregnant with her son, Amy was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys. She was placed on bedrest and unable to continue working. The loss of income was difficult for the household and she found herself in need of assistance. She once again turned to OACAC, this time for help paying her utility bill through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Amy recalled the bill was paid before her utilities were shut off.

“OACAC is one of the places I send everybody.” When friends or family find themselves in need, Amy refers them for support and guidance. “I’ve always had a positive experience with OACAC.”

Nearing 30, Amy is now happily married. She and her husband are raising their two year old son, and they have guardianship of Amy’s 16 year old brother. “Now we’re both working and stable on our feet.” They have purchased a house which they’re remodeling. “When we needed it, OACAC was there.”

Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation serves people of all ages in ten counties across Southwest Missouri, helping them move from poverty to empowered self-sufficiency. Additional information can be accessed about Family Planning, LIHEAP, and the many OACAC programs and projects here.
